Narrative

Sam Houston State University publishes and disseminated information concerning students’ rights and responsibilities. The current publications are the 2007-2009 Student Guidelines [1] published through the Dean of Students’ Office in the Division of Student Services, the Academic Policy Manual [2], the Faculty Handbook [3], and the 2006-2008 Undergraduate Catalog [4], and the 2007-2009 Graduate Catalog [5]. These publications are available in their entirety online. Hard copies of most are available at a variety of locations on campus.

The 2007-2009 Student Guidelines is the primary publication informing students of their rights and responsibilities. All incoming freshmen receive this publication through the mandatory New Student Orientation program [6]. Transfer students who attend Transfer Orientation also receive a copy of the Student Guidelines [7]. Additionally, the Student Guidelines are available online through the Dean of Students’ Office.

The Division of Academic Affairs publishes the Academic Policy Manual and the Faculty Handbook. The Faculty Handbook is disseminated to the Sam Houston State University faculty and contains information on student rights and responsibilities. Students and parents are also able to access these policies via the SHSU homepage link to the Student Section [8], Academic Affairs website [9] or the Faculty and Staff website [10]. The Faculty Handbook discusses such student rights and responsibilities as academic grievance procedures, academic dishonesty, and class attendance. Both the Academic Policy Manual and the Faculty Handbook are available in electronic format to the entire Sam Houston State University community.

Both the Undergraduate Catalog and the Graduate Catalog are published through the Office of the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs. The catalogs are disseminated by the Divisions of Academic Affairs and Enrollment Management. Both catalogs detail students’ rights and responsibilities as they relate to academics. As changes are made to specific degree requirements, the electronic versions of the course catalogs are updated.
