2.3 Chief Executive Officer

The chief executive officer of Sam Houston State University is the President of the University whose primary responsibility is to the University.  The President is not a member of The Texas State University System (TSUS) Board of Regents. 

The chief executive officer of Sam Houston State University is President James F. Gaertner. The job description for the position of president affirms this position serves as the chief executive officer [1].  Furthermore, it indicates that the primary responsibilities of this position are to Sam Houston State University by stating, “The President is the Chief Executive Officer of Sam Houston State University and is responsible for the development, maintenance and utilization of the university's resources in such a manner that its goals, and objectives are achieved in the most effective and efficient manner, and in accordance with the desired philosophy as determined by the Board of Regents.”

Sam Houston State University is a member of The Texas State University System and is governed by the TSUS Board of Regents.  The President of Sam Houston State University is neither the presiding officer of the The TSUS Board of Regents nor a member of the board [2]. The chairman of The TSUS Board of Regents is Mr. Bernie Francis.  The TSUS Board of Regents presides over Sam Houston State University and the position of President [3].
