Narrative
The policies of Sam Houston State University uphold the principle that adequate safeguards and protections must exist to ensure academic freedom. The definition of academic freedom and the rules and policies to safeguard and protect academic freedom are defined by The Texas State University System Rules and Regulations, Chapter V, Subsection 4.7 [1]. These rules and regulations speak specifically to academic freedom and the responsibilities and duties of a faculty member. These policies are referenced clearly in the Sam Houston State University Faculty Handbook [2]. Sam Houston State University has a formal grievance process detailed in Academic Policy Statement 820830 to resolve formal complaints including complaints concerning academic freedom [3]. This policy is in accordance with The Texas State University System, Chapter V, Subsection 4.4 regarding faculty grievances [4]. In the past 10 years, there have been no grievances filed at Sam Houston State University dealing with academic freedom. Policies regarding academic freedom are available through links to the Faculty Handbook [2] on the University’s website.
