4 Goals     8 Objectives     8 Indicators     8 Criteria     8 Findings     9 Actions

GOAL: Abstract Reasoning

Objective Increase Majors
Increase the number of students seeking a BS in mathematics.
Associated Goals: Abstract Reasoning

Indicator Number Of Majors
Number of students with a BS degree plan in mathematics.
Criteria Increase math majors
The number of declared math majors will increase by 5%.
Finding Increase in mathematics majors
The number of declared BS-math majors rose from 18 to 32 over the previous year, and increase of 78%
Actions for Objective:

Action Increasing the number of mathematics majors
Continue to work with enrollment management in recruiting nwe students.

GOAL: Abstract Reasoning

Objective Proofs
Students will be able to construct mathematical proofs.
Associated Goals: Abstract Reasoning

Indicator Pass Rate In Higher Math
A-B-C rate of math majors in higher algebra and analysis classes.
Criteria Pass rate in higher math
70% of the students in higher algebra and analysis classes will receive a C or better.
Finding Pass rate in higher math
52% of the students received a C or better.
Actions for Objective:

Action Pass rate in higher math
Careful advising needed in lower level mathematics classes. Possible examination of topics in prerequisite course.

GOAL: Continued Study

Objective MAA Compatible
Curriculum for the BS degree is in agreement with curriculum recommendations from the MAA.
Associated Goals: Continued Study

Indicator Compare With MAA
Compare BS program requirements with those of the MAA.
Criteria 90% MAA
BS program offerings are 90% in agreement with the MAA recommendation.
Finding Abstract reasoning
Students are unprepared for abstraction which occurs in the Algebra and Analysis courses
Actions for Objective:

Action Prereq change for calculus
The prerequisite for Calculus I was changed to MTH163, Trigonometry, with a score of C or better.
Action Prereq change for higher math
The prerequisite for Algebra and Analysis was changed to "MTH 364, with C or better."

GOAL: Continued Study

Objective Preparation For Grad School
Students who receive BS degrees and who apply for graduate school will be accepted.
Associated Goals: Continued Study

Indicator Accepted Into Grad School
List of students who received a BS in Mathematics and were accepted into graduate school.
Criteria Acceptance into grad school
50% of students who apply for graduate school are accepted.
Finding Acceptance into grad school
Information not available.
Actions for Objective:

Action Acceptance into grad school
Provide students with more information on graduate school opportunities. Follow up with graduates.

GOAL: Fundamental Knowledge

Objective Core Courses
Students will master knowledge of fundamental concepts in core courses
Associated Goals: Fundamental Knowledge

Indicator Pass Rate In Calculus Sequence
A-B-C rate of math majors in Calculus I,II,III, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations.
Criteria Pass rate in calculus sequence
80% of students in the calculus sequence will receive a C or better.
Finding Pass rate in calculus sequence
64% of students received a C or better.
Actions for Objective:

Action Pass rate in calculus sequence
Require departmental approval prior to registering for first calculus course. This way the department can check the student''s background (especially in trigonometry).

GOAL: Fundamental Knowledge

Objective Related Fields Of Study
Students will master knowledge of supporting concepts in related fields of study.
Associated Goals: Fundamental Knowledge

Indicator Pass Rate In Science
A-B-C rate of math majors in the sciences (physics, computer science, etc.)
Criteria Increase pass rate
A-B-C rates of majors will rise in core courses and science courses
Finding Calculus preparation
Many students were unprepared for calculus; just less than 50 percent of students complete Calculus I with a grade of C or better
Actions for Objective:

Action Calculus preparation
Change prerequisite for entrance to calculus - a C or better in Mth 163, Trigonometry

GOAL: Fundamental Knowledge

Objective TExES Certification
BS students who have completed the prescribed certification program in mathematics at SHSU will pass the mathematics component of the TExES exam.
Associated Goals: Fundamental Knowledge

Indicator TExES Pass Rate
Pass rate for perspective secondary math teachers on the TExES exam.
Criteria 100% TExES
100% of students who take the TExES test must pass.
Finding TExES pass rate
The pass rate is over 90%.
Actions for Objective:

Action TExES pass rate.
Students who need to take TExES exam will take a practice test and receive feedback from a designated faculty member.

GOAL: Research Experience

Objective Undergraduate Research
We will offer opportunities for undergraduate research.
Associated Goals: Research Experience

Indicator Student Presentations
Undergraduate student presentations given in a conference.
Criteria Student presentations
Twelve or more students will give presentations of their explorations or research. At least four of these talks will be off-campus.
Finding Student presentations
Numerous students made presentations off campus; about a dozen undergraduate students travelled to give talks.
Actions for Objective:

Action Student presentations
Pursue external funding to provide undergraduate students scholarships to engage in research.
