Mathematics BA

2 Goals     5 Objectives     5 Indicators     5 Criteria     5 Findings     5 Actions

GOAL: Continue Study

Objective Accepted To Grad School
Students who receive BA degrees and who apply for graduate school will be accepted.
Associated Goals: Continue Study

Indicator List Accepted To Grad School
List of students who received a BA in Mathematics and were accepted into graduate school.
Criteria 50% grad school
50% of students who apply for graduate school are accepted.
Finding 50% grad school
Data not available.
Actions for Objective:

Action Acceptance into grad school
The department will institute a plan to track graduates once they complete their degree.

GOAL: Continue Study

Objective Compatible With MAA
Curriculum for the BA degree is in agreement with the curriculum recommendations from the MAA.
Associated Goals: Continue Study

Indicator Compare BA With MAA
Compare BA program requirements with those of the MAA.
Criteria 90% MAA
BA program offerings are 90% in agreement with the MAA recommendations.
Finding Calculus preparation
Students were unprepared for calculus; less than 50% of Calculus I students were achieving an A-B-C grade.
Finding Preparation for higher math
Many students are not prepared for the abstract reasoning in higher math courses.
Actions for Objective:

Action Prereq change for calculus
The prerequisite for Calculus I (MTH 142) were raised to a "C or better" in MTH 163, trigonometry.
Action Prereq change for higher math
Students entering higher Algebra and Analysis classes must now complete MTH 364 with a C or better

GOAL: Continue Study

Objective Increase Number
Increase the number of students seeking a BA in mathematics.
Associated Goals: Continue Study

Indicator Math Major Numbers
Number of students with a BA degree plan in Mathematics.
Criteria math majors increase
The number of students seeking a BA degree in Mathematics will increase by 5%.
Finding Increase in mathematics majors
The number of students seeking a BA in mathematics increased from 3 to 4 over the previous year.
Actions for Objective:

Action Increasing the number of mathematics majors
Students seeking a BA are rare because of the foreign language requirements cuts down on the number of mathematics classes. Still, the department will recruit with both the BS and BA in mind.

GOAL: Continue Study

Objective Integrating Technology
Technology will be integrated into the BA curriculum, including proficiency with graphing calculators and at least one mathematics software package.
Associated Goals: Continue Study

Indicator Technology & Syllabi
Information on technology being used will be taken from course syllabi.
Criteria 100% technology
100% of non proof-based courses use appropriate technology.
Actions for Objective:

This objective has no actions associated with it.

GOAL: Increase Math Majors

Objective Undergraduate Research
Undergraduate student presentations given in a conference environment.
Associated Goals: Increase Math Majors

Indicator Student Presentations
Undergraduate student presentations given in a conference environment.
Criteria Student presentations
At least 12 students will present the talks based on their explorations or research. At least four of these talks will be off-campus.
Finding Student presentations
Numerous students made presentations on and off campus. Twelve traveled to give talks.
Actions for Objective:

Action Student presentations
Pursue external funding to enable undergraduates to obtain scholarships in support of their research.
