Other Qualifications

  • BBA PROD.-LOGISTICS MGMT. -- UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON(1978)
  • MED READING -- SAM HOUSTON STATE UNIVERSITY(1991)

  • Reading 24+
  • Higher Education Leadership 24+
  • English as a Second Language 12
  • Learning Resource Specialist 21
  • Curriculum and Instruction 12
  • My years of service as a reading/language arts teacher in K-12 and a reading education instructor at SHSU make me highly qualified to teach the developmental reading classes. My general experience as a classroom teacher, both in public education and at the postsecondary level, make me highly qualified to teach the SAM 136 Education Cohort.
  • My Texas teacher certifications are also evidence that I can teach the developmental reading course and be responsive to the ethnic diversity. I am certified in elementary education (1-6) and elementary reading (1-6), as a learning resource specialist (K-12), in content area reading (6-12), and English as a Second Language (K-12). I also have Dyslexia Certification from Niehaus Learning Center in Houston. These same certifications are beneficial in my SAM 136 Education Cohort.
  • As I was completing my ed. program at SHSU in 1990, I was selected in the top ten education majors and in the top three reading students. Also, I won campus awards for six of the ten years I worked in Conroe ISD.I was chose Humanatarian of the Year four times, 1992-93, 1996-97, 1997-98, 1998-99. This award was given to one person on each campus for promoting education, school spirit, and civic responsibility to parents and students. I was awarded the Teacher of the Year award in 2000-01 and 2002-03. This award was given to the teacher with exemplary classroom practices and procedures that promoted student learning. In the spring of 2001, I was awarded the Rotory Club of The Woodlands Vocational Educator Award for Fall 2000 because of my work with the Interact Club, a high school civic organization. These awards are evidence that I am interested in student learning, growth, and development both in and out of the classroom. I practice the same student-centered strategies at SHSU.
  • I have the ability to relate to young adults, especially those who are considered "at-risk." I work diligently to help this group of students gain the strategies and confidence to be successful academically. The scores and comments on my teacher evaluations from developmental reading students each semester are continued evidence that I have the academic background and personal disposition to help these students become more academically adept. Because of the education I received at SHSU and my dispositions for working with young adults, I am qualified to teach both developmental reading and the SAM 136 Cohort. Although I have not completed work on my dissertation, I am ABD on my doctorate in higher education executive leadership, which has allowed me to learn valuable information about university administration and leadership. From my doctoral studies, I am better qualified to assist students in decision making processes at the postsecondary level.
