Program Description
The Master of Education in International Literacy is designed for teachers of English as a Second Language. The program addresses the theories of language instruction and incorporates practical issues through a clinical workshop for teaching English language learners. In addition to receiving the MEd, our graduates earn TESOL certification and an International Literacy certificate from Sam Houston State University.
Graduates of this program will be
able to:
- Articulate theories, processes, and principles of language and literacy acquisition
- Prepare research proposals
- Examine the linguistic, sociological, cultural, cognitive, and psychological bases of literacy (reading, writing, listening, and speaking)
- Identify instructional strategies and materials that promote the acquisition of literacy for English language learners
- Evaluate informal and formal assessment for English Language Learners (ELL)
- Engage in reflective analysis of their own beliefs and systematic inquiry into diverse cultures in order to construct a pedagogy that makes diversity an explicit part of the curriculum
- Integrate technology to enhance the learning opportunities of English
language
learners - Apply effective strategies for teaching English using a multicultural lens
- Demonstrate sensitivity to cultural, linguistic, and ethnic diversity.
Admission
Applicants seeking admission to the graduate program in international litereacy must submit the following directly to the Office of Graduate Studies:
- A Graduate Studies Application with the application fee
- Official transcript(s) of all previous college work
- Official GRE scores
- Two letters of recommendation (The form is available from the Language, Literacy and Special Populations Office.)
- Writing sample
- Copy of teaching certificate
